What is an air source heat pump?

Air Source heat pumps are one of the best alternative central heating systems available today. They are energy efficient and work on renewable energy so that you can control your gas and electricity costs and reduce overall energy consumption as well. Air source pumps are a sustainable heating option which is a desperate need of the current time.

An air source heat pump is a system that extract heat from the air outside, bringing it inside the house or building and then heating it up using electricity. It uses the principle of vapor compression refrigeration which involves a compressor and a condenser and therefore heat is absorbed at one point and condensed at another. When it is cold, the heat extracted from the outside air is released into the building and is used to heat the water in the radiators and all other elements that need heating. Again, during the hot days of summer, you can use the system to cool your home. Therefore, air-source heat pumps are perfect in offering a central heating solution for your home or property.

Read the rest of this blog to find out more about the mechanism of how air source heat pumps work and how they will convert your residence into an eco-friendly home.

How do heat pumps work?

Air source heat pumps are divided into two; you have air to water and air to air heat pumps. Air to water uses a wet central heating system while the air to air gives our warm air and this is circulated by fans. Air is a poor medium of heat distribution and thus air -to- air heat pump is less efficient compared to the wet system. With air to water, you can have the monobloc or split system. The former has refrigeration and a heat exchanger cycle within its casing. It produces heat straight to the water system.

With the split air source heat pumps, the refrigeration cycle is built separately from the heat exchanger. The refrigerator is located on the outside while the exchanger is located internally. The air source heat pump has a refrigeration system, where you have two coils made of copper tubing- one is located outdoors and the other indoors; then there is a compressor. The copper coils are surrounded by aluminium fins which help in the transfer of heat. Heat is extracted from the outside air by the coils and this heat evaporates into a gas. The inside coils release the extracted heat into the building.

The refrigerant meets the outdoor air inside the outdoor unit evaporator. The air is sucked through the evaporator by a fan fitted on the side of the pump. The refrigerator liquid absorbs the energy from the air and evaporates in the process. A sensor in the expansion valve causes the liquid to collect the correct quantity of free energy and convert it into gas form. The pressor of the refrigerant is increased by the compressor and vapor temperature reaches about 100 degree Celsius, after which the warm gas passes through the condenser, and heat is emitted outside.

Energy is emitted in this process to heat the room or water. The refrigerator liquid continues passing through a drying filter, which is used to collect moisture from the system. After the filter, it goes through an expansion valve, which leads to a temperature drop.  The refrigerant leaves the valve and passes through the evaporator and changes into vapor again, completing the circuit.

How do you identify an approved air source heat pump installer?

A company that has embraced modern technology

Check out for thermostat expansion valves, which are used to control the flow of the refrigerant, variable speed blowers, a coil design that is improved and copper tubing with enough surface area.

Installation licenses

Not every air source heat pump company you meet will give you perfect work. You have to be careful to choose one that will ensure you have the best and the most efficient heat pump system running in your home.

Quality of the air source heat pump machine

What type of machine are you looking for? Are you looking for an original brand new or a used one? If you have the wrong choice of machine and installer, then you can be sure of a shoddy job and a heat pump system whose lifespan is short. Choose a machine that is from an original dealer and one whose lifespan is determined. The installer of the machine should check for system leaks by using a vacuum to pump out any moisture content.

Check out for a long term warranty paperwork

When you buy your air source heat pump from a recognised and approved supplier, you get a warranty that could be up to three years. This ensures that in case the supplier sells a faulty machine, they will be responsible for doing repairs and replacing it in the worst case. Again, most companies require that you use an approved technician when installing the system for the warranty to apply. Follow the requirements of the warranty strictly so that you don’t get frustrated.

Think about post-installation services and maintenance

The whole matter doesn’t end with the installation of the heat pump, nope. You will need a technician to come checking after a few days and regularly to ensure that it is running perfectly. This is the person who you’ll be calling in case of emergencies and when there is need for a replacement, they’ll make a recommendation. To be on the safe side, get a technician from the company that is selling the system to you, this allows you to negotiate for the regular maintenance services and in case there is a problem with your system, they’ll help you out.

The companies track record & portfolio

Before you choose an air source heat pump installation company, you need to find out; how many clients have they handled before? This will tell you if the technician and the company have enough experience to handle your work. Do not deal with industry entrants when it comes to installing a heat pump system. Get a person that has been in the market for the longest time and someone who has served numerous clients.

Consider their installation cost

How much will the company charge get the heat pump system installed? Here, you have to do enough research and rope in as many companies as possible. Compare their prices and ensure that you don’t compromise the quality of work. Before you choose the most appropriate installer, compare the warranties, free services, and such offers.

The cost of installation of an air source heat pump

Before you call in an installation company, you should be ready with at least a budget of £10,000 to £15,000 depending on the size of the home or property. The cost will depend on the heat pump technology you plan to install. Again, you could be having tax credits or rebates that help lower the upfront costs.

Following are some of the factors that will determine the cost of installing an air source heat pump.

The pump and system size

You have a particular house or property that you want to heat or cool. The size of the area will determine the type of system you will go for. If the size is too big, then you will need a system that produces higher BTU’s per unit. On the other hand, if you plan to regulate the temperature of your house which has just a few rooms, you will only need a small system which will also be less costly.

The quality of the heat pump equipment

Millions of companies in the market today supply heating equipment and therefore you have to be careful and choose one that will serve you perfectly. Get your equipment from a manufacturer with a good reputation and a system that will ensure efficiency. That means you should be ready to pay much more compared to other substandard systems.

Types Of Heat Pumps We Supply & Fit

As approved installers we are always looking to improve our service and we have completed our due diligence and research over the years in regards to what is the best types of air source heat pump. We believe that Daikin and Mitsubishi are the best heat pump manufacturers by some distance. This applies to all kinds of heat pump as well, not just air source pumps. We supply and fit different makes and models, however due to high levels of efficiency we strongly recommend certain pumps like the Mitsubishi Electric Ecodan. Please watch the following video footage where tv personality George Clarke gives some insight into the technology behind the Ecodan heat pump.

Daikin Air Source Heat Pumps Ayrshire

As stated above, with years of experience behind us installing air source heat pump we have narrowed down our preferred to suppliers to two different companies Daikin and Mitsubishi. Daikin air source pumps and their products have been in circulation for over 90 years, longer than any other DEDIDCATED heat pump or renewable heating equipment manufacturer. (unlike the likes of Mitsubishi who have several other designs and inovations in other sectors.) Daikin offer air source, air to water, ground and hybrid pumps all of which are perfectly engineered for domestic properties, with each having a specific purpose for controlling central heating for homes in Scotland across the United Kingdom and all across Europe.

In terms of value for money, Daikin make air source heat pumps more affordable and accessible for more homeowners in Ayrshire and Scotland and whilst offering premium performance and sustainability over the longer term.

Should you arrange a free heat pump consultation with us, we will almost certainly recommend one of the Daikin systems especially if it’s for a domestic property.

Mitsubishi (Ecodan) Air Source Heat Pumps Ayrshire

As far as we are concerned Mitsubishi ecodan heat pumps and systems are the market leading air source heat pump available in the UK marketplace today.

In the past we installed other air source pumps and systems and over the course of time some people had certain issues and faults arise.

In 2019, we have supplied and fitted more Mitsubishi ecodan pumps than any other model and continue to fit them receiving nothing but strong feedback from the homeowners we install them for. Again more tailored to the domestic marketplace, Mitsubishi have designed an air source heat pump for the masses with the ecodan with installation and compatibility rates being easier and higher than any other pump and system.

A little more expensive than Daikin, Mitsubishi also provide air source, ground source, hybrid, water to air and water source pumps which all provide maximum efficiency and are have little to no faults or breakdowns.

It has often been reported that the theory with air source and other heat pumps is that the theory is all technically sound, however the reality of operating a system is often problematic due to poor installation or issues with the equipment.

Mitsubishi Daikin pumps well and truly rise above this belief, offering Scottish homeowners a reliable, long-term renewable central heating solution.

Daikin and Mitsubishi are our only 2 air source heat pump manufacturers, and for good reason after 7 years of deduction and constant improvement of our service.
